记载19世纪末叶，捷克社会民主党奠基人，拉吉斯拉夫萨波托斯基（Ladislav Zápotocký）一生的奋斗史实，说明捷克工厂运动日渐增长壮大的过程。而导演卫司（Jiří Weiss）凭借此片获得了捷克斯洛伐克一等国家奖金。Ladislava Zápotocký, father of the future president of Czechoslovakia Antonín Zápotocký who wrote the book on which the film is based, is in 1880s exiled to his home village of Zákolany near Kladno where he works as a tailor. Being a socialist, he raises class awareness among workers, and organizes a local association that, despite prosecution, manages to win election in 1897 for the social democratic party in the voting district. The film has a relatively high authenticity about life in central Bohemia.
